This is a difficult question to answer given the large number of different devices and options available. Firstly, this question refers to the Bluetooth module and not the speakers which we´ll look at in a later post. The Bluetooth module controls the exchange of data between devices via wireless technology and is limited to a short distance. The limited distance along with the fact it is continuously changing frequency are the principal differences between Bluetooth and other types of wireless technology.
What makes one Bluetooth device better than another is complex because you will generally use the Bluetooth device with speakers or headphones that will also have an impact on the sound quality. Bluetooth devices use a codec (compression/decompression) to reduce the size of the signal. The less data transmitted means a more reliable connection and helps to avoid drop out during your favourite tune. Common codecs include AAC (Apple), SBC, MP3 and others. When the Bluetooth module and the speaker or headphone use the same codec, there is no perceptible loss in quality of the signal. Only when the device and speaker or headphone use a different codec will there be a very subtle difference in the sound quality.
